History

Lettuce (Lactuca Sativa) was cultivated by the ancient Egyptians for its beneficial effects. The sprouted lettuce was even dedicated to the ancient Egyptian fertility god Min, as a phallic symbol and imaginary aphrodisiac.
Lettuce was also known in ancient Greece, where doctors used it as a sleep inducer. It also found its place in ancient Rome, from where it spread throughout Europe. It was subsequently brought to the American continent by Christopher Columbus.
Origin: Egypt
Lettuce originally grows in Asia, where most exports are made. It is an annual, 20–30 cm tall plant that is grown for its succulent salad leaves and oil-rich seeds. These are packed with a wealth of vitamins and minerals.
