ORGANIC PSYLLIUM SEEDS
Black psyllium seeds are an important source of essential fibre, vegetable oils and other valuable substances in their most natural form. They are an ideal ingredient for morning smoothies, porridge, muesli and yoghurt. They can also be used in baking sweet and savoury pastries.
History
First mentioned in the ancient Ayurvedic books of the Vedas
Black psyllium or Indian plantain is an historically important plant. The name itself suggests that the home of Indian plantain is the distant India. The beneficial effects of this plant are recorded in the ancient Ayurvedic Vedas, which were written 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda, also known as the „mother of medicine“, is considered one of the oldest Indian systems of medicine and is still the basis for Indian physicians today. In India, psyllium seeds are considered one of the basic ingredients and can be found in almost every Indian household.
Origin and cultivation
The fruit is a seed-bearing capsule
The country of origin is India, which provides psyllium with ideal conditions for its growth. This annual, sometimes short-lived, plant grows to a maximum height of 15 centimetres. At first glance, its lance-shaped leaves arranged in a ground rosette are obvious. The fruit are the capsules which hold the yellowish-brown seeds.
Composition and properties
Seeds in their natural form
Harvested black psyllium seeds are composed of two parts. The darker central part and the lighter enveloping part called the pericarp. Psyllium is generally known primarily in the form of a loose, light-coloured powder. This powder is made only from the enveloping parts of the individual seeds. Our product is the seeds in their natural form. The seeds as a whole are an important source of essential fibre, vegetable oils and other valuable substances in their most natural form. The seeds themselves are also composed of soluble fibre, which gives the seeds their so-called swelling properties. The psyllium seeds can therefore bind a large amount of liquid and thus significantly increase their volume. The swollen seeds form a thick characteristic gel.
Instructions for use
Ingredient for breakfast, snacks, also suitable for thickening soups,…
Black psyllium seeds are an ideal ingredient for morning smoothies, porridge, muesli and yoghurt. Based on their swelling properties, they can also be used to thicken various soups. They can also be used in baking sweet and savoury pastries. The seeds can be used whole or mixed.
Recommended dosage
One part Psyllium can be left to swell for 20–30 minutes in 3 parts pure water and then consumed.
