There are several types of essential oils extracted from rose – the queen of flowers. They have similar effects but slightly different aromas. Damask Rose (Rosa damascena) has a full and sweet aroma with distinct floral and green freshness. The White rose (Rosa alba) is the finest, its fragrance is unobtrusive, velvety with a buttery citrus note. Rose de Mai (Rosa centifolia) has more intoxicating and seductive character.
Absolue is obtained by a multi-step process using organic solvents, filtration and freezing. It is a gentle method, so it is used for very delicate flowers. The result is the absolute purest and most concentrated essence. It smells stronger than a regular essential oil, and can have a thicker consistency and richer colour.
Although rose is considered a mother oil, handle it carefully during pregnancy, especially when applying to skin.
Rose essential oils and absolutes are very rare, as it takes a huge amount of petals to extract them. A more affordable option is rose diluted in jojoba oil. It has comparable effects because rose oil is effective at very low concentrations.
