This is a small tree or shrub growing with alternate leaves, evergreen or deciduous, depending on the species. It is a relative of the true pistachio, known for its tasty pistachio nuts. They grow in warm areas of the Mediterranean and North Africa and live well over 100 years. They have to survive in very inhospitable conditions on arid, stony and poor soil, high summer temperatures and complete drought, and in some areas even frost.
Mastic oil has been called the first chewing gum and has a rich history of use to support and harmonise the body and mind.
