ZOISITE – stone of growth
Zoisite is a mineral that includes several gem
varieties.
It is formed during the metamorphosis of alkaline igneous rocks and acquires
its green colour from the presence of chromium and
vanadium.
Zoisite occurs in colours green, blue to purple and pink to
reddish and less commonly as grey, white or brown. It has a glassy lustre and
transparent to translucent crystals.
The stone was named after an Austrian naturalist and scientist named Sigmund
Zois von Edelstein, who identified the stone as a unique mineral specimen in his
extensive collection.
Green zoisite and ruby in zoisite are found in Tanzania. Other colours of
zoisite are found in Afghanistan, Austria, Cambodia, Kenya, Norway, Madagascar,
Pakistan, Sri Lanka and many places in the United States.

HISTORY
This mineral was discovered in the 18th century by the Austrian
naturalist and mineralogist Sigmund Zois, Baron von Edelstein,
who made his fortune in the iron trade in Ljubljana. This passionate geologist
owned mines and collected minerals and sent samples of stones collected in
Carinthia to the German mineralogist and geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner.
Werner described the mineral and named it after Sigmund Zois.
