The Mayans have always considered the rich, sweet, seductive scent of vanilla an aphrodisiac and used it as a stimulating perfume. When the Spanish „discovered“ vanilla, they quickly popularised it as a very powerful aphrodisiac. It also gained a reputation as an expensive spice that cooks still add to dishes as a luxury ingredient. Vanilla essence is used in perfumes but can also be added to massage oils or bath oils.
Modern technology has made it possible to produce vanilla artificially, but neither the smell nor the taste are identical. In addition, the synthetic vanilla oil that can be bought commercially has no therapeutic value and may be harmful.
