Why burn incense
Incense burning is an ancient way to cleanse space, uplift the mind,
and induce a feeling of harmony. The smoke from resins refreshes the
air, promotes calm, concentration, and spiritual attunement.
- Calms, helps balance emotions
- Supports attention and a clear mind
- Accompanies rituals and spiritual practice
- Harmonises spaces energetically
- Neutralises unwanted odours
Instructions for use – how to burn incense
On charcoal: Place a quick-lighting charcoal disc in a
fireproof bowl with sand, light it, and place a piece of resin on it. This
method is very effective for quick energetic cleansing but is associated with
more significant smoke and the need for ventilation.
On a burner with a sieve: Special burners with a sieve allow
for gentler and more gradual incense burning, suitable for meditation or smaller
rooms. After cooling, remove resin residues with a brush or by rinsing in
warm water.
In an electric censer: A comfortable, modern, and safe
variant of incense burning that prevents the formation of excessively thick
smoke. A portable censer also prevents the resin from overheating and maintains
a consistent fragrance quality.
Tips for burning incense
For a gentler and purer development of the fragrance, we recommend using a
mica plate – a thin mica sheet that prevents the resin from
burning and prolongs the duration of its scent.
Larger pieces of resin can be lightly crushed in a mortar before use to
release the aroma more quickly.
Safety warnings
- Always use a non-flammable container, keep it out of reach of children
and pets.
- Do not leave burning unattended.
- Ensure ventilation.
- Do not inhale smoke at close range.
- People sensitive to smoke or pregnant women should burn incense
sparingly.
- Not intended for direct consumption or treatment – it is a traditional
aromatic raw material.
Resin or essential oil?
Resins and essential oils share some similar effects, yet they differ in many
aspects.
Incense refers to natural resins, herbs, woods, or spices
heated on charcoal, in a burner, or censer. Essential oils are
highly concentrated plant extracts that are released into the air using a
diffuser or applied to the skin after dilution.
Compared to essential oils, incense offers a more layered and raw
fragrance with a smoky character, a rapid and intense cleansing
effect on the energy of the space, and strong support for ritual and
spiritual practice, meditation, women's circles, and ceremonial gatherings.
Essential oils are particularly appreciated for gently and
long-lastingly scenting the home or workplace and for targeted aromatherapy
effects. Incense is an ideal choice for deeper cleansing,
ceremonies, sacred moments, meditation, and ritual work.
Sacred biblical resin
True frankincense is also known as olibanum. It comes from the resin of the
frankincense tree Boswellia Carterii, which grows in the dry regions of
the Middle East. After incising the bark, white sap begins to
flow, which hardens in the air, creating golden, amber, or ivory
„tears.“
Frankincense has been used for thousands of years. In
ancient Egypt, it was used for embalming, healing, and rituals; in Mesopotamia,
Greece, and Rome, it was valued as a sacred gift to the gods. The Bible mentions
it as one of the most precious gifts. Traditional Eastern medicine appreciates
its cleansing, stimulating, and harmonising effects.
Currently, it is still popular in aromatherapy and natural
healing systems. It adds a deep, resinous-woody tone to perfumes and supports
meditation in spiritual practice.
It is traditionally attributed with masculine, active
energy, and therefore, from this perspective, it is suitable for use
during the day, unlike myrrh, which is preferred at night.
