Do you want to take a deep breath and try something a little less
traditional?
Get yourself some natural menthol crystals. This is a modern and effective
way to fully utilise the fresh power of mint. The pungent aroma will perfectly
clear your nose and bring cooling freshness
and a feeling of lightness and purity to the space.
The aroma of menthol is intense and quickly spreads through
the space. It's perfect for anyone in search of an invigorating sensation:
unlike other resins, menthol crystals do not fill the air with smoke or an
earthy scent; instead, they offer a clean, crisp effect.
You can use them for inhalation from a bowl of hot water,
for incense burning, or in very small quantities in a
sauna. Menthol will bring a feeling of easy breathing, help clear your
head, and relax tense or stiff muscles. It will restore energy when you're
feeling tired, boost concentration and memory, and clarify your mind.
In a room, it will freshen the air, lighten the atmosphere, help
remove mustiness from enclosed spaces, or repel insects. It is
also good for energetic cleansing, especially when you need a
quick and significant effect.
Traditionally, menthol was added to deodorants, balms, and
cooling or soothing skin preparations, mouthwashes, and also as a strong
flavouring in sweets or chewing gum.
An interesting fact is that the feeling of cold it evokes is merely
sensory – the body feels cooled even though the temperature
has not actually changed.
Sometimes menthol is compared to camphor. Both types of
crystals have a distinct scent, but they work differently. Menthol, compared to
camphor, is more
cooling, refreshing, and lightening; it is more focused on the respiratory tract
and head. Unlike camphor, its crystals dissolve in water.
Warning
Due to its strong effect, use only a small amount when
incense burning or inhaling and ensure the area is well-ventilated. In large
quantities, it can cause irritation to mucous membranes. Avoid inhalation during
pregnancy and breastfeeding or by sensitive individuals. Ensure animals can exit
the room. Do not take internally.
A modern incense from an ancient herb
Menthol crystals are a pure, natural form of menthol, an
aromatic substance naturally found in mint. Most often, it comes from field mint
(Mentha arvensis) or peppermint (Mentha piperita). It is
produced by steam distillation from the leaves and aerial parts of the herb. The
resulting essential oil forms solid crystals upon cooling.
Thanks to the concentration of menthol, the intensity of the
crystal's scent is higher than that of essential oil. The advantage of
crystals over fresh herbs is their stability, compactness, and high
effectiveness even in small quantities.
While mint itself has a very long history, humanity began using menthol
crystals only in the 19th century, when the method of their
production was discovered. Initially, they were widespread mainly in India and
China, and later they reached Europe.
Instructions for use
Incense burning on a burner with a sieve: A special burner
allows for gentler and longer incense burning, which is optimal for smaller
spaces. After burning, it is necessary to remove any residue from the sieve with
a brush or by washing it in warm water.
Incense burning in an electric censer: A portable electric
censer offers a convenient, clean, modern, and safe way to smudge. Thanks to the
censer, you will avoid thick smoke and burning the mixture.
Inhalation: Place one or two menthol crystals into a bowl of
hot water and inhale.
Why smudge
Smudging is an ancient way of cleansing space, uplifting the mind,
and inducing a state of harmony. Smoke traditionally purifies the air,
brings concentration, and influences the overall mood.
- Helps harmonise emotions
- Supports concentration and clarity of mind
- Energetically tunes spaces
- Neutralises unwanted odours
Tips for smudging
For a cleaner scent, it is advisable to use a mica plate, a
thin sheet of mica that prevents burning and ensures a gentler and
longer-lasting scent.
Safety warning
- Always use a non-flammable container, keep it out of reach of children and
animals.
- Do not leave burning unattended.
- Ensure ventilation.
- Do not inhale smoke at close range.
- Persons sensitive to smoke or pregnant individuals should smudge
sparingly.
- Not intended for direct consumption or treatment – it is a traditional
aromatic raw material.
Smudging blend or essential oil?
Smudges and essential oils share some common effects, but differ in many
other aspects.
Smudges are natural resins, herbs, woods, and spices that we
heat on charcoal, a burner, or in a censer. In contrast, essential
oils are concentrated plant extracts suitable for diffusers or, after
proper dilution, for the skin.
Smudges are characterised by an authentic, „live“, rawer
scent with smoky notes, allowing for quick and intense
energetic cleansing of spaces and strong support for
rituals, meditations, women's circles, and various
ceremonies.
Essential oils will be useful when you need to gently and
long-term scent spaces or are looking for a targeted aromatherapy effect.
Smudges are ideal for momentary cleansing, ceremonies, sacred
moments, meditations, rituals, and ceremonial work.
Menthol crystals are a crystallised form of essential oil,
which is why, unlike traditional resins, they can be used in more ways. For
example, you can dissolve them in hot water and inhale. Or, in a sauna, throw
them into water or onto hot stones – they will provide an intense menthol
scent. For inhalation or in a sauna, 1–2 crystals are sufficient.
If you are looking for a gentler effect or want to engage in cosmetic
production, the essential oil Wild Mint, Peppermint,
Bergamot
Mint or Spearmint
will be more suitable.
