History
Drink of the Gods
Grapes, a crop as old as mankind itself. Their juicy balls were even enjoyed in ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt and Persia. And even then, they were used to make the favourite drink of the gods, the world's wine. [1, 2]
Accidental discovery
The dried balls left on the vines were a purely accidental discovery by hunters and gatherers of the time. Not only did they like the raisins, but unlike fresh grapes, they lasted much longer. And so a new snack full of energy was born. [2]
Why sultanas?
Sultanas are made from a special grape variety that is native to Sultania, the former capital of Ilkhanate. Compared to other varieties, sultanas are bigger, sweeter and seedless. [3]
Origin and cultivation
Fully ripe, sun-dried
Harvesting, one of the most important stages. Mature grapes are very juicy and must be handled with great care. After harvesting, they are then spread out in a thin layer and dried in the most gentle way, in the sun.
To avoid sticking
As sultanas are, themselves, a source of large amounts of natural sugars, they tend to glue together. The sticking is prevented by a thin layer of Organic Sunflower Oil which is brushed on.
No sulphur dioxide or added sugar
The sultanas are not treated with sulphur dioxide** during processing, so they have a darker colour and a milder taste. Not sweetened
