Jackfruit in a hundred ways
The breadfruit or jackfruit is a tropical fruit from the
breadfruit tree (Artocarpus heterophyllus) originally from Southeast
Asia. Its flesh has a unique fibrous texture that, when prepared in a certain
way, resembles shredded meat. This makes it a popular ingredient in vegan and
vegetarian cuisine. However, it can be also eaten raw as fresh fruit or added to
sweet dishes.
Due to its name, it is sometimes confused with breadfruit (Artocarpus
altilis), which comes from the closely related breadfruit tree, that has
some similar but also different properties.
Why choose dried jackfruit instead of canned?
This exotic fruit is easiest to find in canned form here. However, we decided
to offer dried jackfruit pieces for several reasons:
- Long shelf life – dried jackfruit will last for months
without the need for preservatives.
- No canned flavor – unlike the canned version, it has no
metallic flavor.
- Light weight and compact – ideal for travel and
storage.
Method of use
It is used as an ingredient in savoury dishes. It is also great in desserts
such as cakes, desserts or puddings. It can be used to make jams and marmalades.
You can also add it to soups, where it enhances the flavour and creates
texture.
Dried jackfruit pieces need to be soaked or
boiled before use to absorb water and soften. Once softened,
season with your favorite spices and continue cooking, such as by sautéing or
simmering with sauces.
Soaking – cover the pieces with warm water or broth and
let them soak for 30 minutes. Cooking – add the pieces to
boiling water for 10–15 minutes until soft.
Recommended storage
Store in a dry and dark place. Store in a sealed container after opening.
