Rue scented (Ruta graveolens) is a shrubby herb with yellow flowers and blue-green leaves native to southern Europe. The resulting essential oil is extracted from its flowers by a gentle process, steam distillation.

The rue is a source of rutin, an important biologically active flavonoid known for its beneficial effects on varicose veins. As such, Rutin was first isolated from the leaves of this plant, as its name suggests.
