KAMBABA JASPIS – stone of peace and tranquility
Kambaba jasper is one of the more exotic jaspers, a rare rounded variety from
Madagascar and South Africa. In its depths one can literally glimpse the origin
of life on our planet.
Sedimentary Cambrian jasper consists of micro-crystalline quartz interspersed
with stromatolites, old fossilised colonies formed by cyanobacteria (blue-green
algae) and other prehistoric micro-organisms. These stromatolites date back more
than three billion years and are the oldest known fossils containing the
earliest records of life on Earth.
Green stromatolite jasper and sometimes called crocodile stone or
crocodile jasper. There are several spelling variants of the name, such
as Kambamba, Bambamba and Cumbamba.
The origin of the stone's name is also much debated, with the main theory
suggesting that kambaba jasper was named after Cheitharol Kambaba, the court
chronicler of the kings of Manipur.
Important Cambrian jasper localities include India, the Netherlands, Belgium,
Germany, France, Brazil and the USA.
