Are you looking for the most natural ingredient to nourish your dry skin and
hair, or for making your own homemade cosmetics?
Try unrefined organic shea butter, a versatile natural raw material obtained
from the nuts of the African shea tree. Because it has not undergone refining,
it retains its original colour, characteristic
scent, and a higher proportion of naturally occurring
substances.
Unrefined shea butter is a rich source of fatty acids, tocopherols, plant
sterols, triterpenes, and vitamins, which give it its antioxidant and
nourishing properties and make it a popular ingredient in cosmetics for
dry, stressed, and mature skin.
It will richly moisturise, soften, and help prevent moisture
loss. It leaves the skin feeling hydrated, soft, supple, and
protected from adverse external influences. You'll appreciate
it for caring for dry areas such as elbows, knees, hands, feet, or lips.
It also cares for dry and stressed hair. It helps to smooth
its surface, give it softness, and protect the ends from drying out and
breaking. You can also use it to care for nails and
cuticles.
This unrefined shea butter has a firmer consistency, but
melts easily on contact with the skin. You can use it on its
own, for example, as a body butter, lip balm, or massage treatment, or add it to
your own cosmetic recipes.
It serves excellently as a base for making face and body
creams, whipped butters, ointments, balms, soaps, conditioners, or hair masks.
However, its natural scent and colour should be considered when
choosing other ingredients and the resulting colour and scent of the
product.
Its specific, subtly nutty to earthy scent is a natural
characteristic of unrefined shea butter and is not a sign of defect or reduced
quality.

How shea butter is made
Shea butter, also known as karité or shea
butter, is produced by gently pressing the seeds of
the mighty African shea tree (Butyrospermum Parkii).
The African shea tree grows in the sub-Saharan belt, in
countries such as Mali, Ghana, or Burkina Faso. In its homeland, shea butter, or
karité, has been valued since ancient times in traditional
medicine, as a cosmetic ingredient, and as an additive in local cuisine.
Traditionally, the fruits are harvested and processed by
women, who thus gain a chance for economic independence.
Another important aspect of production is the emphasis on
sustainability and traditional processing
methods.
Refined or unrefined
This shea butter is unrefined. This means it has not
undergone a cleaning and neutralisation process, which, in addition to
impurities, partially removes the typical scent and colour. As a result,
unrefined shea butter retains a larger proportion of naturally occurring active
substances that contribute to its antioxidant and nourishing character.
Key differences between refined and unrefined shea
butter:
- Refined butter has a neutral scent, while unrefined butter has a typical
nutty scent.
- Refined butter is usually lighter to white in colour, while unrefined butter
ranges from creamy to yellow.
- Some beneficial components may be removed during refining.

Crafting tip – balm for dry areas
Allow 20g of unrefined shea butter to soften at room temperature, add 5g of
your favourite vegetable oil, such as almond oil or jojoba oil, and thoroughly
whisk the mixture with a fork or a small whisk. Apply a small amount of the balm
to hands, elbows, feet, or other dry areas. Store it in a clean, sealable jar in
a cool place and protect it from direct sunlight.
Tip: Just before the final whisking, you can mix in 5 drops of your
favourite essential
oil or essential
blend.
Recommended storage
Store in a dry place, protect from heat.
