How is diatomaceous earth obtained
Diatomaceous earth is obtained through mining from natural diatomite deposits, which are the remains of the shells of diatoms, microscopic algae. The extracted raw material then undergoes a cleaning and grinding process, ensuring a high purity of silicon dioxide. The result is a finely ground powder suitable for cosmetic use.
The oldest diatoms come from the Mesozoic era. Silicon dioxide was known in ancient Rome, where it was used as an abrasive in cosmetics and cleaning products. Due to its excellent absorption and exfoliation properties, diatomaceous earth is still valued today.
