Creative fun with salt dough ornaments | June belongs to children

June is a time to welcome summer but most of all, it's a month dedicated to children. To celebrate, we’ve prepared a selection of creative activities that will not only entertain your children and support their development, but also bring a little aromatic magic into your shared moments.

Make fragrant salt dough ornaments at home, it's the perfect activity for rainy days or simply slow down and savour time together. You’ll end up with more than just original decorations for your home or car – you’ll also take away the joy of creating and precious moments shared together.

Why create from salt dough?

Salt dough makes a wonderful base for creative activities with kids. It’s budget-friendly, simple to prepare, and uses only basic ingredients you probably already have at home. As children work with salt dough, they naturally strengthen their fine motor skills, learn patience, explore spatial awareness, and express their creativity. Add a natural touch of colour with BEWIT Spirulina and finish your creations with a drop of essential oil – this way, children engage not just their hands and eyes, but also their sense of smell and colour, making the experience even richer and more immersive.

What you need:

150 g plain flour
250 g fine salt
120 ml water<//strong>
1-2 tablespoons potato starch
BEWIT Spirulina powder - natural dye with a deep green colour
BEWIT Lavender or other favourite essential oil
Cookie cutters
Rolling pin
Straw
String

Method:

Mix the flour and salt in a bowl and add the potato starch. This will soften the texture of the dough and help it to be more malleable. Gradually add water and work into a smooth, non-sticky but elastic dough with your hands or a spoon.

To make the decorations colourful, divide the dough into smaller parts and mix BEWIT Spirulina powder into one of them. The dough gets a green tint without having to reach for synthetic dyes.

On a lightly floured rolling pin, roll out the dough to a thickness of about 0.5-1 cm.

Shape the dough using cookie cutters – hearts, stars, flowers, and circles are favourites among kids. Remember to make a small hole using a straw – that’s where you’ll thread the string through later.

Transfer the prepared shapes to a baking tray lined with baking paper. Dry them in the oven at 70-80°C for about 90 minutes. While drying, flip them occasionally to help them dry evenly and prevent any warping or curling.

After the ornaments have fully cooled, simply add a drop or two of essential oil – BEWIT Lavender soothes and calms, while BEWIT Mandarin offers a cheerful, refreshing aroma.
