How to safely and effectively get rid of body odour caused by sweating

10

Sweating is a major topic among supporters of natural cosmetics. Anyone interested in a healthy lifestyle has likely heard the opinion that this beneficial physiological process should not be suppressed with 'harmful' aluminium-based antiperspirants. What’s the reality behind this? And what alternative do we have if we’re steering clear of conventional products, but still want to stay comfortably dry?

Antiperspirant vs deodorant: do you know the important difference?

We use anti-sweat products every day. We often choose them intuitively by scent or favourite brand. As lovers of natural cosmetics, what should we look for when choosing them? To answer this, we need to start at the beginning - by explaining the difference between deodorants and antiperspirants. Are you ready? So we'll start with a little theory, but don't worry, we'll put it into practice right away.

  • Antiperspirants generally suppress sweating, thereby affecting the body's beneficial heat regulation, including the excretion of pollutants. They contain aluminium salts, such as aluminium zirconium, aluminium chlorohydrate or aluminium chloride, which, like a "plug", block sweating. They also contain preservatives called parabens or synthetic perfumes. Antiperspirants therefore work by blocking the sweat glands, minimising the production of sweat and thus the subsequent odour, including wet patches on clothes.
  • On the other hand, deodorants (including natural ones) neutralise unpleasant odours caused by bacteria multiplying in the armpits, not sweat as such. They do not block sweating itself, because they consider it a beneficial process that cools the body. Natural deodorants contain ingredients with a mild astringent effect, absorbing sweat or drying excessively moist skin to reduce the appearance of wet patches in the armpits. Instead of synthetic preservatives, they use natural preservatives and instead of fragrances, they use nourishing essential oils.

Myths and facts about antiperspirants and deodorants from practice

Many opponents of conventional cosmetic products do not recommend the use of antiperspirants precisely because of the mechanism by which they work. It's good to remember that sweating is an important physiological process that contributes to maintaining the proper function of our bodies by preventing overheating. If we blocked sweating on the entire surface of the body, the risk of overheating would really increase. However, in the case of antiperspirants applied only to the underarms (which make up about 0.5 to 1% of the total body surface), we really don't have to worry about overheating.

A common myth surrounding this issue is that blocking sweat glands stops the elimination of toxins from the body, allowing them to accumulate and potentially cause harm. Let us set the record straight: sweating helps regulate body temperature, but it’s your liver and kidneys that deal with detoxifying the body. From this point of view, you also don't have to worry about using any antiperspirants.

But what concerns us much more in relation to sweating is the question of the use of aluminium salts in conventional antiperspirants. That’s a whole different story – one that deserves a closer look.

Aluminium in antiperspirants: is it really that harmful?

If you visit a conventional drugstore and read the labels on the products, you will find aluminium salts in every second product. This metal is a component of skin creams, toothpastes, lipsticks, eye shadows and other cosmetic products that we apply several times a day. Given how widespread it is, it's worth taking a closer look.

You can read a lot about aluminium in cosmetics on the internet. roadly speaking, there are two camps of people – one group sees it as a major health threat, claiming it causes hormonal imbalances, breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and other illnesses, while the other views it, to put it mildly, as an overblown issue. If you started looking for aluminium in the cosmetics industry like we did, you would eventually find that the truth is, as always, "somewhere in the middle".

Even among experts, there is no clear consensus yet. If we compare the scientific studies, we find that they too often go off the rails in their claims. A large part of them refutes the link to cancer, but some are not so clear. Although the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) opinions from 2014, 2019 and 2021 speak about the safety of aluminium salts, some information around this topic may still give rise to conflicting feelings. In any case, since there is not yet a precise consensus even among the scientific community, and the dangers presented are not clearly confirmed but not refuted, we should approach the issue differently.

You will find the answer yourself. Now try asking yourself this question: Do you want to apply a substance to such a sensitive area as the armpit, which is not clearly understood even by the experts themselves? If you're telling yourself NO right away, we have good news for you. There are already a number of natural and 100% safe deodorants on the market that are highly effective. After a year of development, we came up with one of them.

Hero of the day even without aluminium salts and parabens

As manufacturers of 100% natural holistic cosmetics and long-time experts in aromatherapy, we have set very high standards for ourselves from the beginning. We wanted to develop a product that not only appealed to our discerning clients, but also had something to offer fans of conventional antiperspirants. And because we're well aware that no compromise works when it comes to sweating, we ended up choosing one single favourite from dozens of prototypes.

It's a solid, creamy deodorant with a 100% natural formula free of aluminum, parabens and baking soda that will hold you up in the toughest situations without harming your health. It effectively eliminates odour and also gently cares for the skin under the armpits.

BEWIT Deodorant contains a complex of herbal ingredients that work together to keep your confidence at its peak - even under the heaviest of stress:

  • Magnesium hydroxide (magnesium): reduces the acidic pH of the skin and prevents the growth of odour-causing bacteria. Neutralises odour without clogging pores or abrading the skin.
  • Coconut oil and almond oil: antibacterial and antimicrobial, nourish and soften the skin.
  • Shea and cocoa butters: moisturise the skin.
  • Tapioca starch: absorbs sebum and sweat and helps keep skin dry without irritating it. It leaves a feeling of gently powdery protection and skin that can breathe freely.
  • Essential oils - antibacterial and give the deodorant a pleasant natural scent.
  • Tocopherol 70% - Covi-ox T 70C - (vitamin E): antioxidant and helps prolong the durability of deodorant.

Creamy texture for gentle but effective care

Vegan BEWIT Deodorant has a velvety consistency, spreads easily and is also quickly absorbed into the washed armpits. If you can keep up with the application or use a handy bamboo spatula, you'll enjoy cleanliness all day long - even without sticky skin and white marks on dark clothes. The glass jar will delight fans of the zero waste approach and allow it to be reused - perhaps for another self-made deodorant or body balm.

We have thought of each and every one of you when developing the deodorant. Therefore, in our offer you will find a universal variant with citrus, a men's version with Himalayan cedar, a version for sensitive skin with orange and rosewood, or a unique BEWIT Pure version without perfume, prepared for those who like cosmetics without fragrance or who like to be able to finish the product themselves.
