Multiple chemotypes of thyme
There are several chymotypes of thyme essential oil, which, in addition to
the aroma, differ slightly in their effects. Thyme oil, with its predominant
chemotype component thymol, is considered the strongest and
most intense. However, it can therefore be irritating and
should be used with great caution. The chemotype borneol is
rated as finer in comparison, due to its lower thymol
content.
Thyme of the thymol chemotype is sometimes also called red
thyme. This is because the metal vessels react with the phenolic
compounds contained in this oil and turn red.
Be cautious when using thyme.
Although the effects of thyme essential oil are beneficial, do not use it
during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or with children under 12 years of age.
