History
„Into this herb God has placed a great secret that … “
St. John's wort's medicinal fame dates back to ancient Greece. The father of medicine Hippocrates kept records of its uses in his writings, and famous naturalist Paracelsus wrote about it: „In this herb God has put a great secret that helps from the ghosts and delirium that lead people into despair“. At that time, it was mainly used in the treatment of burns and sciatica (inflammation of the sciatic nerve). Its use also extended to the treatment of bruises, deep wounds and swellings.
Alchemists were fascinated by the transformation of the yellow-flowered plant into red oil
The name St. John's wort is derived from the martyr John the Baptist, when his blood dripped onto the yellow flowers of the St. John's wort. This „blood“ is justified because the grinding of St. John's wort flowers releases red juice, which is due to the high proportion of the substance hypericin. The transformation of the plant with its magical yellow flowers into red oil has fascinated alchemists and is associated with many superstitions. It has also been used in ritual ceremonies as a protector against demons behind gloomy thoughts and lost moods. The Lorsch Pharmacopoeia recommends the benefits of St. John's Wort in dealing with melancholy. Its beneficial effects on psychological conditions are also confirmed by many clinical studies, and therefore, even today, it is recommended especially for troubled minds.
Origin
St. John's wort oil is produced in the Czech Republic. It is macerated
St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a perennial herb with branching stems and ovate leaves perched on them, which are translucently spotted – hence the name perforatum.
St. John's wort has yellow florets which subsequently turn into capsules. According to tradition, the best time to harvest it is Midsummer's Night – at this time St. John's Wort contains the most active substances in the buds and essential oils in the leaves. Among the main compounds, hypericin (a red dye oozing from the flowers) and hyperforin are responsible for antidepressant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects.[6][7] St. John's wort is commonly found in meadows during the summer months.
